A Walk on the Colourful Side

Last week we completed a radical facelift of London Bridge Walk and brightened the journeys of the 12,000 pedestrians that use the route every day.

This was undoubtedly one of the worst and most unpleasant areas of public realm in the Business Improvement District – strewn with litter, graffitied and completely at odds with the quality environment we wish to create for local employees and visitors. Its enhancement has therefore long been a priority for Team London Bridge and we’re pleased to have delivered a project that will better complement Network Rail’s work on the adjacent public realm around the new station.

The area underwent a thorough deep clean before the tunnels were waterproofed and three coats of anti-graffiti paint applied over 650sqm of surfacing and 115m of handrail.

This scheme forms part of our series of ‘gateway’ projects which focus on improving key pedestrian routes through the area with public art, cleaning, greening and landscaping. Another such project is our recent ‘bollart public artwork on St Thomas Street.

Our thanks to Network Rail for facilitating the project, Cityscapes for their design input and our contractor Community Clean.

In the coming days, environmental sustainability charity Hubbub will be using London Bridge Walk to promote their #FFSLDN (“For Fish’s Sake London”) campaign which highlights the damage that littering causes to the River Thames. 300 tonnes of rubbish is cleared from the river every year, 74% of which is food and drink related so please think twice before discarding your coffee cup in the morning…
