Striking new artworks to line St Thomas Street
Artist's Impression: DON'T THINK TWICE by artist Jennifer Abessira
The London Bridge area is a cultural hotspot, however our streets and public spaces can be a little backwards in coming forwards. Although there is some excellent public art to be found in isolation, a stroll through the area doesn't reveal too many indications of the unique heritage and buzzing creative community that helps characterise modern London Bridge.
Along with partners Network Rail, Team London Bridge saw an opportunity to bring a snapshot of the area's colour and vibrancy to the newly opened entrance to London Bridge station on St. Thomas Street, just meters from the foot of The Shard.
MTArt and artist Jennifer Abessira were commissioned to create a temporary, creative interpretation of the London Bridge identity to greet commuters and see their journey in a new light.
All 72 bollards of St Thomas Street outside the redeveloped London Bridge Station will be covered with C-prints of Jennifer Abessira's photographs, creating some of the finest 'bollart' London has ever seen. Her vibrant images are a combination of repurposed archival images and the artist's impressions of important local symbols.
French artist Jennifer Abessira is used to such challenges. She specialises in using images which reflect cultures and communities and she assembles them to create a meaningful and colourful narrative.
The project interprets the shared vision for the area perfectly. The London Bridge Plan, published by Team London Bridge in 2016, identified the need and desire for the area to have a more coordinated, curated approach to 'Placemaking' and to put art and culture at the heart of public spaces and developments. To this end, Team London Bridge has recently recruited a culture specialist to consult on and devise a culture strategy.
Network Rail owns and manages London Bridge station and with partners Costain is rebuilding it as part of the Thameslink Programme. The station is due to be completed by May 2018.

'Our work at London Bridge Station will improve the public’s travelling experience and this project, which reflects the area’s diverse cultural identity, undoubtedly helps us to achieve that. London Bridge is a place that is constantly evolving and changing, so we applaud Jennifer Abessira’s initiative to bring art to the community', - Mark Howard, Costain Project Director.
'The reinvention of St Thomas Street is exciting and important to the direction in which London Bridge continues to evolve. With a new entrance to the station beside the Shard Quarter, Guy's Hospital, King's College and soon to open Science Gallery London, it's location is vital to welcoming people to the area and creating an environment that reflects the culture and identity of our vibrant patch of central London', - Nadia Broccardo, CEO Team London Bridge.
